Returns & Refunds

1. Your rights at a glance
- Cooling-off (7 business days) — for goods bought online, you may return them within 7 business days of delivery without giving a reason. (ECTA s.44 / CPA s.16)
- Defects within 6 months — if goods turn out to be defective, unsafe or not as described within 6 months of delivery, we will repair, replace or refund — your choice. (CPA s.56)
- Group-buy non-qualify — if your team does not fill in the stated window, your payment is automatically refunded in full, or your pre-authorisation is released by your bank.
2. Cooling-off (online purchases)
You may cancel and return goods within 7 business days of receiving them, for any reason. The goods must be unused, in their original packaging, with all accessories included. We will refund the purchase price within 30 days, less the direct cost of returning the goods (which we will quote you beforehand).
Cooling-off does not apply to certain categories listed in ECTA, including goods made to your specification, audio/video recordings or software unsealed by you, newspapers or magazines, perishable goods, and gaming/lottery/auction services.
3. Defective, unsafe or unsuitable goods (CPA s.55–56)
If your goods are defective, unsafe, do not match the description or sample, or are not of acceptable quality, you may return them within 6 months of delivery and choose between repair, replacement, or a full refund. We pay the cost of return in these cases.
This right does not apply where:
- You were told about and accepted a specific defect before purchase.
- You altered the goods in a way contrary to instructions or normal use.
- The damage was caused by misuse, neglect, or normal wear and tear.
4. Group-buy specific refunds
Stokvel.Shop teams unlock the discounted price only when the team reaches its target within the time window shown on the deal page.
If your team does NOT qualify:
- Pay-now mode (default): we automatically refund the full amount you paid, in full, to the original payment method.
- Hold mode (where offered): we release the pre-authorisation on your card. Your bank typically reflects the release within a few business days.
If your team qualifies but your individual payment cannot be captured (for example, the pre-authorised card has insufficient funds at the moment of capture), we will notify you by email and SMS and give you a short window to complete payment. If you do not, we will void the pre-authorisation and may re-open the seat for another member; you will not be charged.
5. How to start a return or refund
Email hello@stokvel.shop within the applicable window with:
- Your order or team reference
- The reason for the return (defect, cooling-off, etc.)
- Photos of the goods and packaging where relevant
We will respond within two business days with collection or drop-off instructions and a return reference.
6. Refund timing and method
- Cooling-off: refunded within 30 days of receiving the returned goods, by original payment method.
- CPA s.56 defects: refunded promptly on confirmation that the return qualifies, by original payment method.
- Group-buy non-qualify: refund is automatic and typically reflects within 5 business days; bank-dependent.
- Where a reservation (pre-authorisation) option is offered on a particular deal: if the team does not qualify, the authorisation release is initiated immediately; bank-dependent timing. This option is not currently offered on any active deal.
7. Damaged or missing on delivery
Please inspect your order on delivery where possible. If goods arrive damaged or items are missing, notify us within 48 hours of delivery so we can arrange replacement or refund and lodge a claim with the courier.
8. Escalation
If you are not satisfied with our handling of a return or refund, you may refer the matter to the Consumer Goods and Services Ombud (cgso.org.za) or the National Consumer Commission (thencc.gov.za).
